Introduction
Any word that we use to describe, define, or address a person, animal, place, or object is a noun.
Definition
Noun is a word which names a person, place or a thing.
Examples of noun in sentences
Let’s take some examples for more clarity.
- John is walking. (Who is walking? = John)
- Las Vegas is a city. (What is a city? = Las Vegas)
- My book is on the table. (What is on the table? = Book)
Explanation
Above mentioned sentences list an example of a word which either names a person, place or a thing. Hence, these words (marked in blue) are nouns.
Also, a noun will answer the questions "WHO" or "WHAT". This means that noun is anything for which people have to invent a name.
The word thing in the definition of noun refers to everything which doesn’t have a life.
- For example:
- Things like book, table, pencil, pen, paper, etc., are examples of a noun.
- These are the things that you can touch, see, and feel.
- Things like mathematics, physics, sports, etc., are the examples of a noun.
- These are the names of subject (things) that you know exist but you can’t see or touch them. Of course, the books of these subjects are the ones that you can touch, see and feel, but not the subject itself.
- Things like honesty, wisdom, success, etc., are also the examples of a noun.
- These are the qualities that you can feel, but you can’t touch or see them.
- Things like book, table, pencil, pen, paper, etc., are examples of a noun.
Let’s take a look at some more examples of a noun:
- Person: John, Donald, George, boy, girl, man, woman, etc.
- Any word which refers to a living person.
- Place: home, office, café, bar, salon, Toronto, Canada, Mumbai, India, etc.
- Any word which refers to a place.
- Thing: book, money, bills, history, freedom, etc.
- Any word which refers to something which does not have a life.

- The soldiers were rewarded for their bravery.
- He saw a fleet of ships in the harbour.

- Cynthia is clever because she always learns her lessons.
- All the kids should go to school.
- Children should be allowed to play outdoor games.
- Every child is special.
- As they say, no news is good news.
- Napolean is one of the greatest military general of all time.
- India is a secular country.
- Unites States of America is a democratic country.

Tips and tricks:
Tips to solve the above exercise: 1). Look for the name of a person, place, thing, or quality. 2). Ask the question "WHO" to find your answer. For example: In the first sentence, ask the question "Who was the wise king?" The answer is Ashoka. Hence "Ashoka" is the noun in this case. 3). Ask the question "WHAT" to find your answer. For example: In sentence number 26, ask the question "What runs on the road?" The answer is car. Hence "car" is a noun in this sentence. 4) “THE” word trick. Use the word in question in a four word sentence beginning with the word “THE”. The _________ is __________. For example: The house is blue. 5) “A” and “An” word trick. This is just like “The” word trick.
